St. Mary’s Church Karakkunnam
In Muvattupuzha – Kothamangalam road, about three kilometers from Muvattupuzha, there is a Church standing at the top of a hill called Karakkunnam. Once that place was known by the name of Perumattom. The place was ridden with throny herbs (like wild kara) and so the name. The Syrian Christians who lived there in those days led simple lives, engaged in agriculture and trade. They hoped for a Church to satisfy their spiritual needs. To accomplish this, they invited Church fathers from Kadamattom Church and installed a cross there, fashioned out of laterite. Those priests from Kadamattom who were invited to Karakunnam were propitiated with “Thamukku.’’ From that day onwards the ritual of Thamukku offering is associated with the annual celebration of the installing of the first cross of Karakkunnam, and this day falls on Vrischikam tenth of Malayalam Calender. On this same day in the Malayalam year of 475, a Church dedicated to Holy Virgin Mary was built to the east of the original laterite cross. A seminary (Malpan Bhavanam) was also started along with the Church, to the south of the structure. A Priest called Paulinus who published a book in 1794 named “India Orientalis Christian’’ has mentioned this Church with some importance. This is an important historical record that throws light on the fame and heritage of this Church.
The laterite cross was replaced by a stone cross made on rock in the 15th century. This cross is still visible in the courtyard of the Church as a relic of history. At that time a Chapel was also built by the N.H. road side. On Vrischikam 20 of 1752 the Sacred remains o Mor Geevarghese, Mor Kuriakose, and Mor Samuel were established in the Church.
The renovation of the Church began on 25th November 1965. Geevarghese Mor Gregorious, Bishop of Angamaly Diocese laid the foundation stone for the renovated Church. The Construction was completed on Nov 28, 1975. Catholicose Moran Mor Baselious Paulose Second Bava Thirumeni blessed the Church and opened the church to the believers. In 1982, the Patriosel of Anthokya and All the East Moran Mor Ignatious Zakhai first visited the Church and gave benediction. On January 12 of 2013. Patriarch of Anthokya raised the Church to the status of “Cathedral.’’ Muvattupuzha area office of Angamaly diocese now functions from this Church and the Church administration is done by His Grace Dr. Mathews Mor Antimose Metropolitan of Angamaly Diocese.
St. Mary’s Church Karakunnam is the Mother Church of Mulavoor St. Mary’s Church, Kalampure St. Mary’s Church, Vazhappilly St. Mary’s Church and Karakunnam St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mor Gregorious Kurisupally at Puthuppady, and St. George Chapel of Kurisupally are functioning under the control of St. Mary’s Church Karakkunnam.
St. Mary’s Youth Association, Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam, Anthokya Vishyasa Samrakshana Samithi, Family units etc come under the administration of this Church. The Church functions according to the statute passed on 22.4.1980. The people of the Parish are strong in their faith and has complete allegiance faith to the Anthokya Throne of St. Peter.
മർത്തമറിയം യാക്കോബായ സുറിയാനി കത്തീഡ്രൽ കാരക്കുന്നം
മുവാറ്റുപുഴ കോതമംഗലം റോഡിൽ പഴയ കാലത്ത് പെരുമറ്റം എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന കാരമുൾ ചെടികൾ നിറഞ്ഞു നിന്നിരുന്ന ഉയർന്ന കുന്നിൻ പുറങ്ങളാണ് ഇന്ന് കാരക്കുന്നം എന്ന പേരിൽ പള്ളി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലം കൃഷിക്കും കച്ചവടത്തിനുമായി വന്ന് താമസമാക്കിയ സുറിയാനി ക്രിസ്ത്യാനി പിതാക്കന്മാർ കടമറ്റം പള്ളിയിൽനിന്നും വൈദികരെ വരുത്തി പള്ളിമുറ്റത്ത് ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന കൽക്കുരിശിൻ്റെ സ്ഥാനത്തു മരക്കുരിശു നാട്ടി, തമുക്ക് നേർച്ച നൽകി ആദരിച്ചു എന്നാണ് പാരമ്പര്യം. അന്നുമുതൽ വൃശ്ചികം 10-ാം തീയതി തമുക്ക് നേർച്ചയോടുകൂടി പെരുന്നാൾ ആഘോഷിച്ചു വരുന്നു. 14-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൻ്റെ ആരംഭത്തിൽ വിശുദ്ധ ദൈവമാതാവിൻ്റെ നാമത്തിൽ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന് വിശ്വസിച്ച് വരുന്നു. പള്ളിയോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് മല്പാൻ ഭവനം (സെമിനാരി) പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്നതായി പോർച്ചുഗീസ് രേഖകളിൽ നിന്നും മനസിലാകുന്നു. 1794-ൽ പൌളിനൂസ് പാതിരി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഇന്ത്യ ഓറിയന്താലീസ് ക്രിസ്ത‌്യൻ എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിൽ പള്ളികളുടെ ലിസ്റ്റിൽ പെരുമറ്റം പരിശുദ്ധ കന്യകമറിയാമിൻ്റെ പള്ളി എന്ന് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളതായ് കാണുന്നു. ഇതിൽ നിന്നും ഈ പള്ളിയുടെ പാരമ്പര്യവും പ്രശസ്‌തിയും മനസ്സിലാക്കാം.
ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ദൈവാലയം പുനർനിർമ്മാണം ആരംഭിച്ചത് എ.ഡി 1965 നവംബർ 28- നാണ്. കാലം ചെയ്ത ഭാഗ്യസ്മരണാർഹനായ വയലിപറമ്പിൽ അഭി. ഗിവറുഗീസ് മോർ ഗ്രീഗോറിയോസ് തിരുമനസ്സുകൊണ്ട് പഴയ പള്ളിയിൽ വി. കുർബാനയർപ്പിച്ച് പുതിയ ദൈവാലയത്തിൻ്റെ ശിലാസ്ഥാപനം നടത്തി പുണ്ണ്യശ്ലോകനായ കാതോലിക്ക ആബൂൻ മോർ ബസ്സേലിയോസ് പൗലോസ് ദ്വിതീയൻ ബാവായുടെ മുഖ്യകാർമികത്വത്തിൽ 1975 നവംബർ 28-ന് (വൃശ്ചികം 15) കൂദാശ നിർവഹിച്ചു. ആകമാന സുറിയാനി ഓർത്തഡോക്സ് സഭയുടെ പാത്രിയർക്കീസായിരുന്ന പരി. മോറാൻ മോർ ഇഗ്നാത്തിയോസ് സഖാ പ്രഥമൻ പാത്രിയർക്കീസ് ബാവ തൻ്റെ ഒന്നാം ഭാരതസന്ദർശനവേളയിൽ (1982) ഈ പള്ളി സന്ദർശിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും മനോഹരമായ സുറിയാനി പള്ളി എന്ന് കൽപിച്ചത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. 2013 - ജനുവരി 12 - പരി. മോറാൻ മോർ ഇഗ്നാത്തിയോസ് സഖാ പ്രഥമൻ ബാവ ഈ ദൈവാലയത്തെ കത്തീഡ്രൽ പദവിയിലേക്കുയർത്തി.
14-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ച കുരിശിൻ്റെ അതേ സ്ഥാനത്ത് 15-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ കൽക്കുരിശു സ്ഥാപിതമായി. മോർ ഗീവർഗീസ്, മോർ കുര്യാക്കോസ്, മോർ ശ്മുവേൽ കാദീശ എന്നീ വിശുദ്ധരുടെ തിരുശേഷിപ്പുകൾ താഴെ കുരിശുപള്ളിയിൽ എ.ഡി. 1752 വ്യശ്ചികം 20-ാം തീയതി സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. പള്ളി പൊതുയോഗ തീരുമാനപ്രകാരം വൃശ്ചികം 10-ാം തീയതി പെരുന്നാളും കുരിശുപള്ളിയിലെ 20-ാം തീയതിയിലെ പെരുന്നാളും സംയുക്തമായി വൃശ്ചികം 15-ാം തീയതിയിലേക്ക് മാറ്റി ക്രമീകരിച്ചു. ഇപ്പോൾ എല്ലാ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച്കളിലും ഈ ചാപ്പലിൽ വി. കുർബാന അർപ്പിച്ചു വരുന്നു.
കാരിമറ്റം സെൻ്റ് മേരീസ്, മുളവൂർ സെൻ്റ് മേരീസ്, കാലാമ്പൂർ സെൻ്റ് മേരീസ്, വാഴപ്പിള്ളി സെൻ്റ് മേരീസ്, കാരക്കുന്നം സെൻ്റ് മേരീസ് കത്തോലിക്കാ പള്ളി എന്നീ ദൈവാലയങ്ങളുടെ മാതൃദൈവാലയം ഈ വിശുദ്ധ ദൈവാലയമാണ്. 750 ഓളം ഇടവക ഭവനങ്ങൾ ഉള്ള ഈ ദൈവാലയത്തിൻ്റെ കീഴിൽ വിശുദ്ധന്മാരുടെ തിരുശേഷിപ്പുകൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള താഴത്തെ കുരിശുപള്ളി, പരുമല തിരുമേനിയുടെ നാമധേയത്തിലുള്ള വാരപ്പെട്ടി ചാപ്പൽ, പരി. ഏലിയാസ് ത്രിതീയൻ പാത്രിയർക്കീസ് ബാവയുടെ നാമധേയത്തിലുള്ള പുതുപ്പാടി കുരിശിൻതൊട്ടി, മോർ ഗീവർഗീസ് സഹദയുടെ നാമധേയത്തിലുള്ള പള്ളിയുടെ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്തുള്ള കുരിശിൻതൊട്ടി, ചാത്തുരുത്തിൽ മോർ ഗ്രിഗോറിയോസ് കൊച്ചു തിരുമേനിയുടെ നാമധേയത്തിലുള്ള വാരപ്പെട്ടി കുരിശിൻതൊട്ടി, മോർ ഗീവർഗീസ് സഹദായുടെ നാമധേയത്തിലുള്ള ചിറപ്പടി കുരിശിൻ തൊട്ടി, യൽദോ മോർ ബസേലിയോസ് ബാവായുടെ നാമധേയത്തിലുള്ള മുളവൂർ ചാപ്പൽ, എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം വിശ്വാസികൾ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ച് അനുഗ്രഹം പ്രാപിച്ചു വരുന്നു.
പള്ളിയുടെ കീഴിൽ കാരക്കുന്നം, പുതുപ്പാടി, വാരപ്പെട്ടി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ സൺഡേസ്‌കൂളുകൾ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. സെൻ്റ് മേരീസ് യൂത്ത് അസോസിയേഷൻ, വി. മർത്തമറിയം വനിതാസമാജം എന്നീ ഭക്തസംഘടനകളും, 4 വാർഡുകളിൽ ആയി 10 കുടുംബ യൂണിറ്റുകളും വളരെ സജീവമായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്നു. 22.04.1980-ൽ രജിസ്റ്റർ ചെയ്ത ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്ര ഭരണഘടന ഈ പള്ളിക്കുണ്ട്.
പള്ളിയുടെ സ്ഥാപനകാലം മുതൽ എക്കാലവും ഈ ദൈവാലയം പരി. അന്ത്യോഖ്യാ സിംഹാസനത്തിൻ കീഴിൽ അടിയുറച്ച് നിൽക്കുകയും ആ വിശ്വാസമനുസരിച്ചുള്ള ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങൾ നിവർത്തിച്ചും വരുന്നു.
